Man in the Hole

Role: Producer, Designer, VR Man

Genre: Puzzle / VR

Development Time: 3 Weeks

Team Size: 4

Engine: Unity 2018

In Man in the Hole, you are a contestant on a morbid game show where a captive man is run on a conveyor belt toward a killer wall. Your job is to pull out blocks to make a hole big enough for the man to go through, or else they’ll be dismembered.

On this project, I was responsible for:

  • Managing the team organization over the short developing time

  • Managing team documentation & project deadline turn-in

  • Learning how to operate Steam VR and an HTC Vive headset

  • Making all VR interactions operational using Steam VR tools

Designing for VR

This was my entire team’s first VR project, and with such a short amount of time to work with and so little experience we had to adopt a very quick turn around time from building to testing and back. Because of this we were able to overcome our first-timer syndrome and create a simple yet still fun VR game.

Wrangling VR in Real Time

Due to the extremely limited development window and the team’s general lack of experience with VR we had to learn what we were doing on the fly. For me this meant learning a lot about how to make VR players and intractable objects work on a tight schedule. Luckily for me Steam VR was easy enough to work with and using the tools I was given I was able to slap together exactly the kind of VR interactions our game needed.
