Punch BlockZ

Role: Design Lead

Genre: Action

Development Time: 8 Weeks

Team Size: 7

Engine: Unity 2018

In Punch Blockz, you are a cube with one purpose: to punch fast and hard! Hit as fast as you can and dodge deadly enemy attacks as you defeat wave after wave of bad guys.

On this project, I was responsible for:

  • Managing the team and coordinating between our different members

  • Managing team documentation and project deadline turn-in

  • Balancing player/enemy values and bug fixes

  • Designing the gameplay loop

  • Menu design and functionality

Gameplay Design

I worked closely with our main gameplay programmer to design the main gameplay of our game.  We wanted the game to be punchy, quick, and demanding quick reflexes, which we were able to deliver on. Once we had our initial version of the game I then made sure that everything that went in after in terms of gameplay kept with the design. To that end I made sure that our menus controlled similarly to the main game for simplicity of use, and balanced values on enemies, spawn times, and the player to keep the game rolling at a brisk pace without getting overwhelming.

Leading the Team

As the design lead I was the one on the project that had the clearest vision for what the game should be. This meant that I ended up as a de facto team leader. I worked with all of the other team members to try to keep our vision cohesive while also ensuring that the game was still fun to play.

The Rush To Mobile

By the final weeks of this project the crew was pushing ourselves to figure out how to further improve our game and we weren’t coming up with much. Then it was suggested to us that our game would work great on a touch screen, and after some debate we decided we were going to android. I worked closely alongside the programmer in charge of figuring out how trough controls would work to ensure that the controls would translate well. After we added android support, I was in charge of creating the android build as well as enlisting some outside people to test on their phones. In all we only had about a week to switch to android before the deadline for the project.
